Cleanup: Rework some cases of 0x notation with function specific defines.

This brings in a practice that I decided to switch to in order to make the code more verbose.
The long define names and the three leading and trailing underscores are additional mechanisms used to reduce the likelihood of naming conflicts.

I did not do an exhaustive search.
I just took care of the ones that I happened to see.
